Odin’s Playground

Odin’s Playground this year was fun, for the short time I could be there.  I had planned to fence on the saturday, but then had to go to a baby shower in the evening, so it was just the fencing, then I’d come back on sunday and do more of the games.  As it turned out it was great weather on Saturday, but poured all night and all day sunday.  So Sunday was canceled, which meant only one Rapier Tourney and no games for me.

The tourney had a large number of entries.  It was a lot of fun.  There were a number of fencers from the okanagan who I don’t get to fight a lot.  It was also my first tourney since Eddies.  I did well.  I had 9 wins which put me about a third of the way up the ranking, at the bottom of the mid level fighters.  The field of 13 fighters was good with a general mix of people from the two dons all the way down to someone at their first tourney.  Only one person truly dominated me, and that was Godfrey.

It was a fun tourney, as it was only worth a few points in the grand scheme of the event, and so most people weren’t quite on their game, which helped for a first tourney back since spring for me.  It meant that I got to focus on putting into practice what I’ve been working on: aggression, dagger work, adjusting stances to fit the situation, etc.

There was a big problem for me though.  I wasn’t on my game at all.  I’ve been improving my game at practices, but then when I came into tournament I just didn’t have my head in it.  I couldn’t analize like I have been.  I was tentative in my engagements.  I was double thinking everything and slowing myself down, I wasn’t committing.  It was so odd to do that after working so much on committing in practice.  I wonder if it has anything to do with it being a tournament instead of a practice.  Maybe I need to work on my tourney mindset.

The Sunday I did come back even though it was canceled.  I brought fresh baked bread around to trade with people.  Everyone was very happy to have fresh hot bread on such a miserable day.  I can’t wait to have a portable bread oven so I can do that at all events.

Practice and Eddies

Had a great time at practice.  We did some running and high energy exercises.  There were a number of new fighters there.  I got to do some slow work with Giuame, and that was very good for helping me settle some actions, like fighting close.  Then I got to work with Godfrey and we worked on brawling and fighting close.  I had some trouble closing, but once I had I was able to be effective.

Two days later was Sir Eddies.  The fighting was good, and I fought about the level I expected.  About half way through the tournament I was pretty exhausted and allowed two very quick losses that should have been more difficult.  I managed to hold of most opponents for a while, and got in a few good shots.  My greatest weakness seems to have been when I let up the pressure.  I’ll have to work on keeping my aggression high.  I had only one fight that I did not like the outcome of.  I won’t go into a name here, but it was a fighter I had not met before.  Throughout the fight he threw multiple shots without being aware of his aim or the power behind it.  I have a sore hand from one particular shot which got him a talking to from Oberst Luther.  I also had to call a hit on him.  During an exchange I managed a beautiful cut across his hand while I had his sword out to the side.  He managed to move his sword enough to cut my dagger hand on our way apart however.  I put my dagger aside and turned back to begin the fight again to notice that he had not put aside his weapon and was in his guard.  I pulled back my sword to show that I wanted to talk and asked him if he had felt anything on his hand.  His reply “I thought I felt something, but I didn’t think it was there long enough”.  I replied that I saw it as a valid cut, and asked the marshal.  The marshal thought it was a valid cut, but asked Oberst Luther, who was watching the fight, his opinion.  Luther agreed that it was a very good cut and the fighter switched weapons.  The fight continued and I let a shot through my guard and he cut my arm.  I accepted the blow, and though I didn’t like the fight accepted the result.  After reporting I asked Luther about the fight and he told me that the final cut that ended the fight had no pull at all.  The other fighter had not called back his bad blow.  I was disappointed, but as I had accepted the result I told Luther that I would leave it with the whitescarves to work out.

The end result of the tournament was a top four with Don Godfrey, Warrick, Giuame, and Callen.  Godfrey and Warrick were out in the semi-finals, and Giuame won over Callen in a wonderful, skillful, and honorable finals, watched by Prince Ieuan.

With the one exception it was a wonderful tournament.

Aquaterra Champions

Had a great tourney on Saturday.  I drove down with my Lady and Theign Oak.  We got through the border without issues and made it to the event just a bit before court, with enough time to get parked and set up and all.  We came forward to kneel and say that we would fulfill the duties of a champion if we succeeded.  After that we had the rest of the morning off, as the tourney was scheduled for one in the afternoon.

The event was outdoors with a few things in small halls.  And it was freezing.  Very freezing.  It tried to snow once.  So we spent most of the morning inside halls either watching the A&S or the Bardic competition and trying to stay warm.  Around noon Oak and I began practicing a little, and trying out the baton and cloak, as both were likely to come up in the competition, and Oak didn’t have much practice with either.

After lunch we armoured up and began practicing.  We got some fights in with some of the local dons and they gave us some good pointers, then we got ready for the procession.  We had the procession and setup for the tourney.  There were six entrants.

Gearing up

I’m off to Aquaterra’s All Champions event this weekend.  It looks like an interesting event.  You had to apply to compete, and you must have heraldry present with you.  It’s a challenge tourney.  Odd format though.

One person challenges another to a number of fights.  The challenged party chooses the weapons for the fight.  After all competitors have fought the fighters who the baroness believes fought the best/bravest/most honorable will receive tokens from her.  This happens for two more rounds, and then a champion is chosen.

I’m looking forward to it.

I’ll be heading down with Oak, and there are four other fighters competing.

Tomorrow at practice I need to practice with the other weapons, and I would like to get at least one fight in against Warrick, as he fights with a different style than I am used to.

Speaking of style, I’m a little nervous at fighting people whom I have never fought before, and don’t know the style of.  At practice tomorrow I’ll try out a stance that is purely defensive and is used to provoke your opponent into letting you know how he fights.  It’s some marrazo, but I’ve never tried it before.  Should be interesting.

Investiture

I got to fight in my first investiture tourney this week.  It was my second tourney since I’ve been back.

I fought well, and placed better than I expected, defeating three people.  One of whom went on to win.

On the Sunday I fought in the Cadet Tourney, sponsored by Oberst Luther Magnus.  I did much better than I expected in this tourney, with 14 victories, which is almost 50/50.  Luther gave me some tips which helped a lot, bringing my dagger lower, and pulling my sword closer to me.

With the dagger lower, it needs to move a bit more to protect my head, but it needs to move less to protect the rest of me, which I found was useful in my parries, and kept me alive much better.
